That's a wonderful set Larry.  The 1684 is an O27 loco and those are 0 gauge cars. The factory putting sets together to have something to sell. Must have been more than one if they made up labels for the box.

Odd that 4 wheel cars and tender would be labeled as O-gauge, not 027, but by 1942 Lionel was wrapping-up production and switching to war production. Also the set is uncataloged, does say 027 on the set box. Looks like clearing-out inventory was more important than making sure that labels agreed. A great little set, and great piece of Lionel Prewar history. So unusual and rare, but as Terry said, they made enough to justify printed set-box labels.

thx guys, love this set...really unusual, huh? forgot to mention the tender has a whistle too. Set looks unplayed with so I`m sure there is a sad story behind its condition. Happy New Year all..LM

Lonely trains, often have a sad story behind them, but are great for the collector.
I bought a mint set long ago and was told that it was a gift for a boy who was sick, and passed away shortly after. I enjoy the history but not when it is so sad.

I had a near mint 763E years ago. It came with the madison cars on my layout. I sold it because my dad had one on the layout, and it would just end up looking the same after a few years.

The owner said he never ran it because he didn't have room for the 072 track. He ran the 226E instead.
