General Discussion / Lionel 1700E restore 4
« on: December 09, 2020, 11:11:11 AM »
I'm have a good time repairing Lionel 1700's. Currently I have six 1700 sets. One is being left alone as it's super good. Runs great. E-unit works.

The second I painted all Silver. A good friend told me Lionel did one of those and Dick is very knowledgeable about Lionel.

The third one I did in Orange & gray. However the cars a ribbed (Fluted). But I like it and it's mine so I can do what ever I want.

The fourth one is in primer. I was going to do it Yellow & Brown. The new book says the set should be smooth sided. My cars are ribbed. I do have one 1700 and two 1701's that are smooth. However no 1702. Mine is ribbed.

Number 5 has the paint all removed and the cars are all chrome. The chrome is perfect. Someone had painted the cars gray? So look's like that set will be Red & Chrome. I've been looking for a local shop that would chrome the bodies for me but now I will not need that done.

General Discussion / Lost shipments in mail
« on: December 08, 2020, 04:56:55 AM »
Has anyone else had the mail (USPS) lose there stuff. I'm still waiting on a Lionel 1901 to 1942 Greenburg book. My friend in New York mailed allot of parts for my 5 Lionel 1700E restore projects. One of those items lost is a 1700 Motor. I've had 3 EBay purchases never show up. One guy on EBay said that was my problem and refused to refund the money? EBay showed him the error in his ways! I didn't know you could type those kind of words on the feedback. He was real upset over 15.99?

Anyway I hope you are all doing better than me. I forgot - thinking of getting a Lionel 259E. Saw one on another forum that someone (A Women I Think) had gotten at a thrift store for $30.00 and put $ 25.00 in it. So for $ 55.00 they had a super nice looking and good running prewar train for the Christmas tree this year.

General Discussion / Lionel 1700E Jr restore number 3

I'm doing another Lionel streamline Jr. This one is really rough. Lots of rust. Going to have to make some new tabs. Motor needs new wheels. I believe this one has been in a flood. Showing lots of water damage?

General Discussion / 1935 Lionel streamline Jr 1700E
« on: November 19, 2020, 04:07:02 PM »
This is the first new bought Lionel streamline Jr. It's a smooth sided model sold in 1935. I'm trying to modify the size of the picture so I can post on this forum.

I’m still working on the picture sizing thing. So far I’m not getting it done.

Sense I'm still working on getting pictures that will load on this forum I'll post a you tube of this 1700 Jr.

General Discussion / Restoring Prewar Lionel Streamliner 1700E
« on: November 16, 2020, 07:55:49 AM »
I like the prewar Lionel 1700E. When I was a kids in the late 1940's I got my uncle's 1700E that was chrome & red. I enjoy them around the Christmas tree. Some how in all my moves I lost it. I guess it must have been packed in a different box than all my steamers. I enjoy restoring Lionel I find on EBay. I think this forum is not into restoring but everybody is different. I currently have three Streamline 1700e' Most needing allot of attention. I've always put my Lionel stuff in real not water with a cup of tide. Let is sit for a few hours and the original paint will be off when you get the item out of the water. what does not fall off you can brush off with no trouble. The last few steamers I did I had allot of trouble. So I bought a sand blast from harbor freight. This thing is great.

Two days ago I blasted all the paint off a 1700e. This morning I sprayed primer on all three 1700 items. Now to select the paint color. There are so many different sets that Lionel produced. Plus my paint supplier seems to be on vacation sense March of 2020.  This year (2020) has really been nothing but trouble.

Anyway I thought I'd post some video's of the process sense I can't seem to get a picture small enough for this forum.

Layouts / My L shaped O gauge layout in garage
« on: November 16, 2020, 07:43:18 AM »
I have a small layout in my three car garage. Mostly post war stuff. I do have modern engines also. I love my 2016 Lionel Mikado. It pulls like a Mack truck. And will pull very slowly.

Every time I try to post a picture it always tells me it's to large. So I thought I'd just put a youtube link of my layout. This is my smallest garage layout I've ever had. In 2012 I had 4 4X8 sheets of plywood. But now it's just 2 sheets. I'm almost always out in the garage early in the morning before my wife gets up.
