Collector Corner / Re: 1929 Lionel Standard Gauge Outfit 349

Terry. I bought this.   Only the second orange baggage door I have seen.  I have the other one.  It came in a set with orange windows with a 380e.   I also have a set of Mohave 418, 419, 490 cars that have orange windows, baggage doors and people doors.   The only other set of those I have seen was on a visit to John DeSantes.  He thought they were paint samples.  I lean toward a factory oops.  They may have needed several baggage or people doors, we’re out of maroon paint, and just painted them orange cause that’s what was in the gun/vat.

Is the red 10 set for sale?  It’s the only Macy set I still need.

General Discussion / Auction houses not placing phone bids.
« on: February 23, 2022, 09:21:06 AM »
Has anyone else had issues with major auction houses not placing your phone bids that were called in?  I have had two different houses, two weeks in a row, do this to me.  Not only have I lost out on some great stuff,  but the sellers are being cheated by not potentially getting top dollar for their items.   On at least one item, my bid was double what it went for.  On most I was bidding 30% or more higher than the final price.  Any feedback is welcome.  I want to know if there is any recourse with the auction houses. They basically said we made mistakes, so sorry, too bad.  My take is that even a verbal bid is a contract.  I can guarantee that if the bid was placed and I didn't pay, (up holding my end of the contract) There would be consequences.

Collector Corner / 6044-1x nestles boxcar
« on: February 12, 2022, 03:38:33 PM »
Does anyone know what set the 6044-1x nestles boxcar came in?  The lore is that it was a Chicagoland area grocery store. The Schmidt book doesn't list this car even though it is supposed to be 1961.

The brown 6014 arrived today.  It is right as rain.  Exactly as described in the TM book from the 80’s. Red mold painted brown with heat stamp lettering.

Any one have a report.  Would be interested to know how many were there compared to previous years?  What was there? Were people buying?

Does anyone have insight as to why Ebay is a mess for finding items right now?

General Discussion / Re: which electric engine goes with a 219 crane car?

Too small.  The only sets that had a crane were the work trains.  380, 390e, and the 400e.

Looks like it has been modified with a "block" of some kind between the frame and the shell.

I bought two of the cars years ago with a I believe 1588 tender, 4 wheels, but with a whistle. Was able to get the three cars later and the 259e with nickle trim to make it right.  I am assuming the tender is correct as it came with the cars from a non train guy.

The vast majority of serious collectors that I have meet have at least one other area of collecting interest.  The trains were usually the main area that the money and time went to, but the secondary ones were also important.

If I would only collect trains, I would have quite the collection.  Not the measly 5000 pieces I have.
