"The first 8 set was a boxed with setbox olive loco and two cars. It came from the Lambertville flea market in the later 1960s. I gave the set to my sister's boy so he'd have a train to remember his grandfather."

thx for sharing that--love it Terry...that flea market was called the Golden Nugget. A flea market my Dad took me to in the `70`s..

Like new 2812X burnt orange gondola--last run 1942?..I say this because of what I found inside each of the pull-apart 0209 barrels. Each one had a little red painted barrel. It matches the red paint on 362-78 and 0209 red painted barrels...hmmm...anyone ever see or have?? they do not look amateur/little boy painted. They do resemble a little bit like the prewar 3652 operating gondola barrels too..

thx guys, love this set...really unusual, huh? forgot to mention the tender has a whistle too. Set looks unplayed with so I`m sure there is a sad story behind its condition. Happy New Year all..LM

I wonder why Madison had a supply of the 1703 head-cars. Lionel over-produced this car that was only used in uncataloged sets?????
Also noticed that the AL on each of the 3 car boxes in your set is a different stamp. Helps to prove it was a factory "put-together" from on-hand stock.
Never had the 289E loco box. Have both black and gunmetal locos, but no boxes.
Great set.

yep, all 3 car boxes have different  "AL" stampings. I know the 289E is tough, but I'm thinkin this box is a lot harder to find than the actual loco..

tough to find a satin black 289E let alone the box for the loco--I have never seen this loco box, you?  this set wasn`t played with much...1937..

Curious, do you polish it?
its got really nice factory enamel paint on it, I did use OZ polish and it came out great
