General Discussion / Re: Made a camera car
« on: June 16, 2021, 05:05:48 PM »
Is the camera mounted on a velcro pad, looks like it. This is a good idea so you can change the angle of the camera. You may find that aiming the camera inward a bit helps control the rest of the room from being in the video. I also aim it down to avoid getting the ceiling lights, for this you may need to add a second velcro pad at the front end of the car, so the camera car is not in the video. Also remove the car end-railings, if you have not already done so.

My inside T-Rail main line does have some curves, but has no switches and of course is 072. I can run long double headed or push-pull trains of 20+ cars on this main and have never had a derailment. The outside T-rail main has 3 switches which occasionally cause a derailment, but I have still had great success running long trains on it. Most Marx can not run the outer main because of the switches. My inside lower-level tubular line has regular O-gauge curves on the reverse-loop under the mountain, it feeds the ramp to the upper level. The ramp and upper level loop over the Standard loop are all 072. The upper loop is relatively fool-proof, with the one modern Lionel switch occasionally giving a problem. Prewar runs better as the tinplate flanges are thicker. I only have a problem with postwar as the thinner flanges sometimes "pick-open the switch frog", then the train derails. For the most part I have had very few derailments.

There certainly is a wealth of information posted in the last year, all someone has to do is dig-in and look for it.

Impressive to see 5 Standard Gauge trains running, I bet it was noisy! Nice with all the different levels. In one shot, it looks like the layout continues into another room, but is that mirrors?

Yes I forgot to show them but we do have cows on the layout. You can see them in the Yankee streamliner video. Ha Ha Ha.

OK, this is really a tuff question.
It is definitely a Hiawatha set.
Or maybe a prewar Marx Army train.....but which one?
The Lionel North Shore Limited in apple or later Girard green has always been a favorite.
I think I know why I have too many trains.

I think the concept of a "favorite train" is ever-changing. It could be the one you just got, or the one you pursued forever and have not yet got.
My favorites change when I take one down off the shelf or out of a lugger where it is hiding, get it ready to run, on the track, then hit the throttle. Like a kid I still get my eye down at track level, or maybe let the GoPro do that for me as it is easier on the knees. When that train goes past, in that moment it is my favorite train.

However, I probably do go back to certain ones. The top contenders for me would be the No6 with 2 #29 daycoaches that I got from Lou Redman in 1981, or my 700K Kit Hudson with a string of scale freights 714, 715, 716 and 717.........or maybe my red 450 610/612 Macy set, my postwar 2338 Milwaukee Rd freight set (my first Lionel set in 1955) or maybe.........It is just too hard to narrow it down!

Also we are just sharing the images for personal use, not selling them, maybe just a mute technicality.
The Military floor train is very cool, definitely influenced by the First World War.
The pacifists would scream if you tried to make such a toy for the "kiddies" these days, how things have changed.

Odd that you mention the strips of wood on a 101 bridge. I just listed one on ebay, that I had to remove strips of wood, about 1/2" thick. The guy removed 1 side, drilled holes in the wood and used 1" screws to re-assemble it. This guy must have also had a 400E.

I have a 3 piece standard gauge bridge, 42" long overall, wood structure, some metal on center span and stamped details on ends of center span. Landscaping is composite material, track is early Lionel with split center pins. Is this an early 103 or 105? It is the same dimensions as the later enameled steel bridges. The metal girders on the center span are not Erector.

The images on the back wall of the layout photo look like the front cover of the 1913 and 1914 Lionel catalog. That image shows the Euro-looking tunnel/mountains with stepped portals ( I thought were Marklin) also the early 103 or 105 bridge and right, the Ives stations with dome are Lionel number 28. Ives made the station for Lionel? These accessories show on inside pages of my copy of 1912 and a few years earlier catalogs. They show on the cover of 1913 and 1914, but do not show on inside pages. My copies are in the Greenberg book, is the book missing some pages?

This video also shows the AF President on that layout. I wish I still had the set, sold it to a guy in Gt Britain.

On my previous layout, the "Hole in the Wall Ry" I ran a Blue President set with litho 19" cars. I had both Lionel and MTH wide radius switches (probably the same), and had no problem.
My first video shows this set running on that layout.

Trains look great. I like the silver and gunmetal one best, all looked great flying around.
