Title: We're burning up !!
Post by: romiin on June 30, 2021, 08:38:56 AM
133 fahrenheit.  setting records all over British Columbia. A neighboring town hit over 121 fahrenheit hotter than Vegas. Is this the new norm?  They said only about 40% of the province has air conditioning,  not use to this heat.  In the middle of it some communities are flooding from such fast snow melt on the mountain tops.  Wild fires starting up everywhere.  It is too hot for the helicopters to run.

Sorry to hear that Loco. It’s hard for me to understand that. I’m in Florida and 90 is normal but 133 blows my mind! Hope you can stay safe and cool. Heat stoke really sucks. I’ve been there in 2005 now I hate the heat. Wish we had moved back to Indiana.

Sorry typo 113 fahrenheit , but still hot as H#LL. Lytton BC was 121 fahrenheit all time record. . I've been hiding inside as much as possible.  Proves we don't just have snow up here.LOL

It's like the end of the world! Unbelievable, so many unusual things happening, the virus, the heat, the rain, the wildfires, the wacko's. The best you can do is try and stay safe. Hope things get better for you...and the rest of us.

Ya. Wacko's are on the list of natural disasters.  That town Lytton that broke all the heat records, just burned up. People had 15 minutes to get out.   I hope they all did.  It's going to be a smokey summer.

I moved to a suburban town for the basement, and to get away from the wackos. I did well.

Here in the desert we're currently at 91 degrees with light rains. That's at noon. I hope it stays cool over the weekend.

I can deal with everything but the wacko's. They're the only thing that prevents me from enjoying retirement.

You definitely have to keep your eyes peeled these day. Some of these poor homeless(drug attics) are about as unpredictable as they get. I guess the world is burning up in different ways. Get yourself a weapon, and mind your own business I say!

California Gov. Newsom announced on Wednesday that all homeless people will get $3844 a month in housing assistance in addition to any other benefits they qualify for.

Arizona Governor Ducey just asked the state legislator to approve the purchase of one-way bus tickets to California.

You did know the movie Mad Max was set in 2020? We're a few years behind schedule.

Is there any precedent to kick a state out of the union? Seems to me that America would be allot better off without California? They are nothing but trouble.

I've been watching and participating in this thread.  I'm torn between allowing the members enough room to get to know each other and the point where it's too far away from the topic of toy trains.

With the dog posts people don't get upset.

With the weather people don't get upset.

With politics people get upset.

People screaming and throwing food might be a normal holiday dinner in my family, but I really want to avoid that here.

I don't know where the line is, but in this thread is close to the line.

Let's keep it about trains.

Terry, well said. My train room gets up to about 80 degrees at times. I have a window air conditioner that prevents it from getting near 90 which is about all I can expect. The temperature variant between winter and summer ranges from about 65 - 80 degrees with humidity no higher than 55% at any time. My only other alternative is to re-box all my trains and put them in the basement which is also humidity controlled. But then I have all these shelves in a room with nothing on them. I think I'll take take my chances with the few near 80 degree days I have in my train room. If I can't see them, I can't enjoy them. At 70, will I live long enough to notice any physical deterioration of my trains due to weather? I don't know, probably not. I'll just keep dusting them twice a year (April & October which coincides with YORK by some strange, or maybe not, chance).

He is not upset with you Loco. It’s my remark about California. Guess I lost control again.

I don't think it was just you, its not hard to get a rant going these days. I guess the trains are our escape from it all, I think Terry is saying lets stick to that.  Point taken. Loco

Mike, you need to worry about the boxes not the trains. Here in AZ the boxes just fall apart. I've pulled boxes from attic crawl spaces that were so dried out they crumbled at a touch.

The corrugated boxes de-laminate. Labels fall off. The boxes and paper give off cellulose gas that reacts to bare metal, zinc plated metal, and to some paints and inks. (I commonly find nice boxed postwar Lionel locos with green scum on the valve rods.  There are many Hot Wheels cars brand new in the blister pack with damaged frames and graphics from the outgassing of the cardboard.)

I have 4 prewar Madison cars that were LNOB when I got them in 1996. The cars got ruined because they were wrapped in the white foam used to pack apples and something ATE into the paint. The boxes were complete with all flaps, but now the flaps are just falling off.

After seeing the Madison car boxes last spring, I sold a bunch of the boxes I had and kept the trains. God knows what is happening inside the file box of old catalogs. Those might be in a plastic box. Does that make it worse or better?

Think about this. . . I packed my trains up and moved them from one air-conditioned room to another. I packed them in Feb/March of 2019. All the early period trains were unpacked by April 2019. I'm still unpacking the trains that go on the layouts now in June 2021. The newsprint is dried out and easily tears. The older paper in boxes packed 2-3 years ago is falling apart.

I tried years ago to get an archivist to do an interview with me years ago about preserving these old toys, but couldn't find anyone.

Interesting comment. As I believe I've mentioned before, my boxed sets are back in the boxes due to lack of shelf space. I suppose I could take the contents out and start angling the trains on the shelves. (What a I saying? I already do that.) That kind of defeats the purpose of the shelves though, as the more I angle the trains, the less I see of them. Then there's the track, rheostats and such. I suppose those could stay in the boxes. But then where do I keep the outfit boxes? My intent was to keep things together instead of being spread out here and there. My catalogs, ads, and other paper are in archival sleeves so I don't worry much about them. I guess I'll have to keep a closer eye for deterioration on my boxed outfits and go through them more often.

About 60* in my basement in the summer, here in NJ. A bit colder in the winter, I use a portable heater to heat it up some.
The trains and me stay cool in the summer.
Sometimes I turn off my central air when I go down in the basement because it is too cold down there.
Going down now to vacuum, mainly to get the spiders. Then I apply some pet friendly insect spray to try to keep the spider population down.
This week high in the 90's with high humidity. I just weeded my small garden and watered the plants, I am soaked in sweat!
Now down to the cool dungeon. :)

Yeah, we are also in the 90's here in SE Michigan. Can't do much outside. Train room is 75 but with low humidity so it feels comfortable. Enjoy the cool in your basement.
