Collector Corner / TIN PLATE WIND UP TRAINS
« on: January 10, 2021, 02:49:36 PM »
Anyone have any windup trains?

Here is a Hafner, one along with a Mar-line's tender.
A save from a dump.
It is missing a wheel but I think I have one somewhere.
The motor still works. All need a cleaning.

They never lost a shipment for my orders. Anyone.....knock on wood.

Ordered paint brushes from Amazon and got an empty bag !
Like the driver didn't notice it was an empty bag? ! I noticed as soon as I looked at it sitting on the porch.
They sent another right away.

I started the wood in April 2020. I spent 30-50 hours a week on it during the initial lock-down. Now I'm doing maybe 20 hours a week as I want to get other stuff done.

Pictures are simple. There is a link to instructions in my signature.

Wow, like a full time job.  :)

Nice, the last video, are you working the throttle or are they speeding up and slowing down by themselves?
What the tractor trailer parked back there? A K Wopper?

General Discussion / Re: What is this American Flyer O Gauge
« on: January 07, 2021, 03:49:45 PM »
I asked a Flyer man, he said this,
American Flyer made Wide Gauge since Lionel had a Trademark on the use of Standard Gauge, otherwise it is the same.
I am no expert on this stuff from the early 1930's but that looks like an American Flyer O gauge engine similar to #3107, made 1930 to 1932.
There are some painting detail differences but otherwise it is the same.
Were it Wide Gauge it would be 12" long, but the wide gauge equivalent engines had different details in the stampings.

Looks in good shape?
Does it have a number anywhere?

Pictures do not represent what the naked eye sees, I know by looking at some of mine. :)

I think they look nice, maybe get out the air brush and weather them up a little?
That might take care of the different color problem?

If that is not to your liken, they you can repaint it.  :)

Collector Corner / C N J Switching Shanty's.
« on: January 07, 2021, 01:40:35 PM »
I have 2 for around my table.

The first picture is of a real rebuild in process to save a piece of history. Not mine but a Thumbs up to them, they are rebuilding other things. They just got a locomotive in to rebuild.

This is sold as a kit. I don't think that he sells them anywhere else but on his web site, some of you might know of him.

This is #1 ( #2 is still not built yet. )  :)
I made this (for now) portable, you may see it in other spots on my table.  :)

EDIT, Give Andre some business maybe? He has other kits for sale.
Good man to deal with, nice products if you like kits.
Tell him Ed sent you.  8)

I don't think you can get the Shanty's model anywhere else.
These shanty's were made to order mainly for the Old Jersey Central.
They were made from cement.
A lot of these old shanty's are just being scrapped, a shame. :(

Andre's site,  https://riverleafmodels.us/product/cnj-switching-shanty/

EDIT, I guess I should add that the kit only comes with the structure, all the other stuff you see for the inside, I bought elsewhere.

NO

Maybe just a bad can of paint?
I sit my cans in a bowl of warm/hot water for a while before I use them.
Then shake the you know what out of them.

I used to deliver chemicals to all the paint places.
One I used to go to was Rustoleum in Haggerstown, Md maybe once a week.
Years ago the changed their spray heads and I like many others didn't like them.
I asked why the change and was told that with the new head you didn't have to turn upside down to clear the nozzle. It stayed cleared.
Plus with the new head you could spray with the can upside down, sideways whatever and the paint would shoot fine.
They said with the old nozzles you couldn't do that.

I told them that I and a lot others hated them.  >:(

Maybe try baking them like Terry said?
I leave mine in my bay window to bake them with the heat of the sun.
I don't touch them for at least a week.

Who made your turntable? It is nice, because large enough to hold most any L&T, maybe not a Hudson. An O gauge turntable is the one thing that my layout lacks. I have a 1-gauge roundhouse for Standard Gauge, but just a single switch at the entrance. You can see videos of my layout, click the link below.
 https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCUfhIqTj6nbDLmY3rXzvn7g

I am surprised the you never saw one?
That is the Atlas turntable. I bought that with the roundhouse for $125. The bridge on it is 26".
That was in 2008 ish. Now they list it as a Atlas #6999. And it says the bridge is 24".

It was the cheapest turntable out there at the time. Back then they were going for around $200 for just the turntable.
I don't like the white and have been thinking about weathering it up............since I had it.  :)

Back then there were other O turntables, the cheapest was around $600, some going for $1500 to $2000 bucks!
I was unwilling to toss the bucks out for one, but they really looked good compared to this one. They actually had a sunken pit and looked more realistic.
Plus this one all you need to mount is a level spot on your table, the others you have to cut a hole.

Didn't have a chance to look at the videos yet.

You can post any kind of toy train as long as it's made before 1970. So far the board is mostly prewar because that's what I collect and what the collectors I know collect.
Over the years I've pulled at least a half dozen O gauge blue comets from the original owner or descendants. Even the boxed ones were beat up.

Yeah, I know.  I figured I would start with my Prewar first. :)
I am a big fan of the Blue Comet.

Are you saying when you got them most were trashed up?

After you sprayed on the clear coat, was the silver still coming off after it dried?

Sticking to as why the site was started.
Prewar,  I have a couple things I can add.

Busy day around the yard.
263e/263w Gun metal Gray. (They also had a Blue #263e locomotive to pull the Blue Comet.)
Made 1938/39.

That diagram post #10 that Terry posted.
You do know if you click on it it enlarges?
Plenty big then.
EDIT, never mind I didn't see the Terry told you that. ::)

A couple of thoughts.
What brand paint did you use?
What brand clear coat was it?
Prime it?
Prep work?
A wipe down with alcohol (or something) before painting?
How many coats? How long of a wait in-between coats?
How long did they sit before you picked them up?
The humidity level must be high down there?
