« on: May 16, 2020, 01:05:06 AM »
Here's something I saw on eBay earlier:

Hmm. One of you postwar collectors should buy it so you can tell use what it is.

Here's one of the attachments from above inserted into the post box with tags:

That is not as usable.

I'll try to find a way to put the pictures into the text area with the thumbnail viewer. I think that's optimal - explain something then show picture, then more explanation.

The VW forum I visit makes you upload pictures to a picture folder (each user has his own folder) then you insert them into the posts. It only allows 640 by 480 images. That might be an option? From what I see right now, I cannot make the pictures called with tags into thumbnails automatically. That's probably why they are forcing  such small pictures.

I'll look for more image options.

A few other notes since I have your attention. If you bookmark this page:

You should get a list of all posts and replies since your last visit. On the RIGHT of each topic past the time posted is a little document with an arrow. That's a link to the portion you haven't seen.

When I use a board like this, I go to the page above and then read down the list of topics and open the ones I want to read or continue to read in new tabs.

I gave you the whole series of 33 locos except this one. The first version has slide on headlight or pedestal.
34t1-2 is the older version. Note that these locos and the earliest of the 4 wheelers do not have binding posts. Some of the very last production 33 and 42 locos don't have binding posts either.

I just added a viewer option  to make the thumbnails expand in the post when clicked on. One of the buttons in the upper corner  of the slide show viewer will size the picture to it's maximum size.

Also when there is a series of thumbnails like in the post above, there are arrow keys in the upper right corner to see them in order without closing them.

Here's two more production runs of the 33 loco.

I changed the photo options on the board.

Now you can do 12 photos per post. Each photo can be up to 180KB in file size. If you try to upload a picture greater than 180KB the post will fail.

While writing a post, you can insert a thumbnail of the picture into your text by clicking insert after browsing to the picture you're going to upload with the link to the right of the upload image line.

It will look like this:

You don't have to upload all your pictures to insert them, just put them into the attachment area so you have an insert link.

(If you already uploaded pictures into the forum, you can modify your posts to put the pictures into the text with the modify link in the right corner of each of your posts. They will not have the veiwer features explained below. They will act the same as they were acting before today's changes.)

When clicked on, the thumbnails open in a viewer. There are controls in the upper right corner.
  • The arrows move from image to image within the thread. This means if Paul posts a picture and Jim posts one in a reply, you can compare them with the arrow key.
  • The triangle makes the images in the post rotate like a slide show when you click on the triangle repeatedly.
  • The box with with arrow in corner makes the picture maximum size.
  • The X closes the image viewer. You can also click on the picture to close it.

Here's another thumbnail. . . click on it to check out those features.

I did see a modification that would put text near the image saying click to enlarge, but that is not compatible with these features so I couldn't install it. We'll all get used to clicking to see the pictures like we do on eBay.

NEAT.

Below are  a bunch of posts by me building out what is explained above. You can ignore it. Or check out the pictures of some 33 locos. I think gray 33s are interesting. I have gray 33 locos  from about 1916 all the way to the end of production.

Here's some pictures.   These might not have the features explained above.

I don't want repaints so the 5 is out.

I have two sets of 19/190 cars with red inserts. No pullman in either set.  Both have 3-hole steps and long platforms. The variation is block or scroll lettering on sides. I don't want to trade, but if you use the number 42 in the description I'll will see them when you post them on eBay.

This sounds like a good feature.

Thanks for offering.

My 2245W has the same ex-IVES trucks with the two triangle cutouts. It's the same tender you show with nickel journals and the plastic nib on the slide shoe.  Mine has a diecast whistle chamber.

About the 2245T, I went crazy years ago with the seperate sale whistle tender sets. I never saw or heard of a diecast tender coming in a seperate sale box.  I think the diecast tenders - 2226W, 2245W/2235W and 2224W always came with a whistle unless there was a specific reason why not.

Those reasons would be export or sales to areas with odd electric currents, specials to keep the price down for department stores, and clean outs in 1942-43. Or any combination of those.

I have these two locos that are duplicates. Actually, the 38 I'm keeping has a brass strap headlight, while this one has a nickel.

Both are original paint with no touch ups. The 38 pilots and couplers are painted red over chips in the paint, this was done a LONG time ago. The 38's bell is held on with a screw and nut rather than the correct screw, but looks correct and old from the outside.

The 150 loco has the wrong screws holding the body onto the frame in the picture. I replaced them with correct filister head screws. One corner soldier seam has failed. This is front left corner when headlight is to left in pictures.

The 150 has a short. The 38 has no short, but does nothing.

Trades only. I want early Lionel items - before 1925. Something equally rare and exciting. What you got?

I have the 2245W tender just like you show with a Black 225E. It has no center pickup on front truck (not sure if that's correct) and a 2-rib hood on the coupler. There is a plastic nib on the coupler slider. It has an inventory sticker my dad put on it says goes with 225E-3, the loco has no sticker. The stickers fall off so that means nothing.

I've never seen a 2245T tender. Maybe that's for export to areas where the trains ran on DC or on odd phase AC.

I just put one of those couplers llike Jim shows onto my 2228B tender.

The 2227B has the same coupler but shorter. (My 2227B was "repaired" by the seller with a glued in spear. I removed it.)

The loose truck below is one I put on 2228B tender from my parts bins. It has the right height for 800 series freight cars.

Notice that these have springs to push the hood back down.

Layouts / Re: Jim's Layout
« on: May 10, 2020, 05:12:11 PM »
You're a bit farther along than me Jim. I like the packed in toy look.

I'm going to see if I can find add ins that will make the pictures easier to use. On the VW board users upload pictures in one area and then call them into posts. That seems like too much work.

Layouts / Re: Jim's Layout

Jim, I moved your layout post into it's own thread. This way in six months your progess will be easily seen.

I'm trying model this board after a VW board that works well.

You mention grass is sawdust in paint. I have questions. . .

I was looking at your gray ballast. Is that just sand in paint?

I tried some playground sand and white paint. I painted the area where the track goes and then poured sand on. Then after it dried, I vacuumed up the extra sand and painted over it again. I tried it with and without masking tape, and the tape is better.

Is that what you're doing?

I think I made a mistake in my wiring notes above. The wire on the 2232 and 2233 might take ground to the e-unit? The e-unit lever turns ground on and off. I don't have one here to look at.

Paul - all the loco couplers are connected to the tender coupler shoe.  All the locos should have the left cab socket wired to the front coupler. On the teledyne switchers (227 & 228) the relay is also connected to them.

My dad had all these switchers except the 230. I only kept the 228 and the 701 which I upgraded a few years ago. The 228 never did anything but sit on the shelf.

I know the tender has the wrong truck which I can easily fix. The loco itself is screwed up bad, but runs really well. Might be a rare factory error?
