General Discussion / Site Dead?
« on: February 19, 2024, 12:17:17 PM »
I sent a friend here to join up as he is into Prewar trains and told him to check the site out.
He messaged me this reply,
"The site is dead. The last update was in 2021 and the discussion board was ended and unplugged."

Dead?

Collector Corner / TIN PLATE TOWER
« on: March 26, 2023, 01:37:01 PM »
Won this off eBay, listed for $9.99 I watched it. No one bid, relisted at 99 cents, I put a whopping bid of $1.66 in.
I won it. I can't see why no one else bid, lol.  :)
Tin plate experts......do you know what it is?

I stuck it in the back, 16" high.

Collector Corner / PREWAR TUNNELS
« on: January 11, 2021, 02:14:59 PM »
Post your tunnels you may have here, if you want to.

MARX PREWAR #390 FARM SCENE TUNNEL

This is the Prewar Marx #390 Farm Scene tunnel, it is a common item.

There is also a Marx #309 Camouflage tunnel this is the scarcest one to find, collectors often call this one the autumn leaves tunnel. I think because of the "camouflage" coloring it did not sell in great numbers.
Then there is a Marx #392 Mine Scene tunnel which is also quite common.
Most of these went for around $.98 cent when new. :)

All the tunnels come as two halves joined at the top by interlocking 'fingers' and at each end by either a metal clip (early versions) or a screw (later versions).

This is an earlier version.
I don't know the year, I am guessing middle to late 30's?
This was also saved from the trash/dump pile from my Bro in law.

Collector Corner / TINPLATE RR STATIONS.

Post your stations here if you have any, If you want.

I will start with my Marx Grand Central Station #2940.
This was given to me by my Father, someone gave it to him he said it was going to be trashed.
Looking at some on ebay right now mine is in good shape.

I took it all apart cleaned it up with soapy warm water then polished it with Meguiars polishing compound.

I think mine is an early station 1938? It only has a center mounted light. Future ones I think had the two side mounted lights inside?

Mine is missing one sign and the windows.

Collector Corner / WHAT IS IT? UNDER "ODD TRAINS"
« on: January 10, 2021, 03:25:58 PM »
I won this on eBay.
COLE LINES, with a Postwar Lionel chassis.
Homemade?
Maybe someone made this body up for the chassis?
I don't know, but it runs.  :D I had to have it,I paid a whopping $44 with shipping.
That was years ago and I have not seen another, one of a kind I think?

Anyone have any windup trains?

Here is a Hafner, one along with a Mar-line's tender.
A save from a dump.
It is missing a wheel but I think I have one somewhere.
The motor still works. All need a cleaning.

Collector Corner / C N J Switching Shanty's.
« on: January 07, 2021, 01:40:35 PM »
I have 2 for around my table.

The first picture is of a real rebuild in process to save a piece of history. Not mine but a Thumbs up to them, they are rebuilding other things. They just got a locomotive in to rebuild.

This is sold as a kit. I don't think that he sells them anywhere else but on his web site, some of you might know of him.

This is #1 ( #2 is still not built yet. )  :)
I made this (for now) portable, you may see it in other spots on my table.  :)

EDIT, Give Andre some business maybe? He has other kits for sale.
Good man to deal with, nice products if you like kits.
Tell him Ed sent you.  8)

I don't think you can get the Shanty's model anywhere else.
These shanty's were made to order mainly for the Old Jersey Central.
They were made from cement.
A lot of these old shanty's are just being scrapped, a shame. :(

Andre's site,  https://riverleafmodels.us/product/cnj-switching-shanty/

EDIT, I guess I should add that the kit only comes with the structure, all the other stuff you see for the inside, I bought elsewhere.

Collector Corner / PREWAR/POSTWAR DINERS. O or Standard gauge.
« on: January 04, 2021, 10:43:17 AM »
Post your Diners here, O or Standard gauge.
Prewar & Postwar.

My #442.
Prewar #442 Diner Made from 1938 - 1942 until the war was declared and factories went into war mode.

It took Lionel until 1938 to introduce it's first version of that truly American landmark, The roadside diner.
Lionel's # 442 was an accurate representation of the old railroad cars that you saw along the highways. NJ had a whole bunch of them.  :)
It measures 10,1/2 x 5,1/2 x 3 inches and uses the body from a Lionel # 610 Pullman.
Lionel painted, or repainted, these Pullmans- giving them bright red roofs, light red trim, and ivory bodies. Because Lionel had never produced the # 610 in "diner" colors. The plates of the 610 were also changed. The large center one now read "DINER" and the small plates to the left and right now read "EAT".
The body is mounted on a hard-board, free-form base, the bottom which is screen backed. (The board was most likely manufactured by Masonite Company.)
The little diner was landscaped (but only in the front) with two shrubs and a grassy, green sawdust lawn surrounded by hedges. The hedges ran from the left door to the right one.
The 442 was illuminated. (recommended to be run at 12 volts.)

Is it the only Prewar Diner they made? Well that's open to debate as a few have popped up through the years.
But none using the 610 bodies.
And the #442 is the only one that was cataloged.

Took me around 5 months to find what I was looking for. Watching on e bay. I refused to go over my max. I am glad I waited.
This one is complete in nice shape and complete. Though it may be a little dusty now.  :)

Layouts / POST YOUR BRIDGES on Layouts
« on: January 04, 2021, 10:08:16 AM »
Post the bridges you have, on or off the layout.

I have a few I can post.
I pulled out this first, I don't really know the manufacturer or year.
Measures 26" Long
5 1/4" wide
& 5 1/2" to the top of the tower.
This one is naturally weathered. :)
Has two red lights/bulbs up top.
I like it, don't know about painting yet as it has a nice patina now, maybe add some rust and use it either as a train bridge or a vehicular bridge without painting it.
Anyone recognize it?
This one needs a home somewhere, I took it down off a shelf.

EDIT,
IF THIS IS POSTED IN THE WRONG PLACE YOU CAN MOVE IT? RIGHT?
