General Discussion / My Unique Train Item
« on: July 27, 2021, 04:57:13 AM »
In the interest of gaining more participation, I am starting this thread. It targets a subject that has been discussed elsewhere.
It is my belief that every Train Collector has at least 1 item that he / she thinks the rest of us have never seen.
This is one of the main inspirations for collecting, to own unique items.

We ask any and all of you to post that item.
Any of the senior members will be glad to assist you if you have difficulty posting your pictures.
They can be cell-phone photos, but have to be reduced in size, some phones will even do this.

My first unique item is not very exciting or flashy, it is a piece of track.
This is a 2-7/8" gauge Lionel crossing track, made before 1906. I am also showing the catalog cut from 1905 describing it.
It is 2-rail ribbon-rail mounted to a wood base.
I believe it is fairly unique, because one was not even available to show in the Lionel Trains Standard of the World book.
This is my unique item, and I ask if anyone else has one. Also that you post your unique item.
It can be a magnificent set, a piece of track or anything in-between.

Collector Corner / Bild-A-Motor with numbered wheel
« on: April 11, 2021, 01:13:37 PM »
Has anyone out there seen a Bild-A-Motor or Standard Super motor with numbers incised into the hub of a wheel like this?
If so, any idea what it means, possibly the Bild-a-motor part number as other parts of the Bild-a-motor are numbered?
I have never seen this before, but maybe it is common.
I have also seen numbers on cast iron wheels, such as on a 42 early electric, but do not currently have an example to show.

Collector Corner / Lionel Early Standard Boxcars 114 and 14
« on: September 13, 2020, 05:09:49 AM »
In another thread, the 114 boxcar variation with CMSP lettering instead of normal CMStP lettering was brought up, mentioned that it could be an old repaint.
This is a very legitimate variation. I have 2, one has Lionel Lines large end stamp and other has Lionel MFG emboss underside, both are brownish-orange, assumed to be late Manufacturing production.

General Discussion / Favorite Postwar Electric Locos
« on: August 24, 2020, 01:12:19 PM »
Lionel made only 4 types of electric locomotives in the postwar era.
1. The diecast GG-1 was first in 1947 as single motor 2332 then 2330, 2340 and 2360 dual motor locos. They came in brunswick green or tuscan, and there was also a rare black version of the 2332. Most had 5-stripes, except the 2360 also came with a single bold stripe.
2. The "Little Joe" type came in Hew Haven, Milwaukee Rd, PRR and GN, all with bplastic shells and single motors.
3. The 2329 Virginian was the only single-pantograph rectifier type.
4. The 520 was the only GE 80 ton type.

Collector Corner / Unusual 250 series Electric Locos
« on: August 23, 2020, 01:44:00 PM »
Here are some unusual 252 type center cab locos.
First is a Peacock 252 with orange bottom stripe, probably for an uncataloged set.
Second is a dark green 252 with reverse switch and copper journals.
Third is a 252 in olive with larger "blocky" type numbers on plates.
Fourth is a 250 in original olive, early trim and no reverse lever or slot.

Collector Corner / Lesser-known toy train manufacturers
« on: August 17, 2020, 08:14:22 AM »
Here are some photos of 2 lesser known manufacturers, Thomas Industries and Sakai of Japan. Thomas Industries produced some high quality metal and diecast locos and cars in the 1940's and 50's. The 1880's Shawnee Express train, 4-4-0 American type loco and Pioneer cars are probably the best-known Thomas Industries products. The TCA website shows a surprising variety of diecast and metal cars and locos produced by Thomas (surprising to me!) If anyone has any other Thomas products, It would be nice to see them. Note that the station platform shown is also Thomas.

Collector Corner / Lionel 121 High Window Stations
« on: August 09, 2020, 06:33:32 AM »
There was mention made of an early 121 station with "High" windows, but I was not able to find it to link this to, so Terry you can move it if you want.
I have 2 early 121 stations, both same light salmon color, darker green window trim and black-background waiting room signs.
One has the raised windows on front and back only, but the other also has raised windows on ONLY 1 side, the other side is regular height, aligned with top edge of front/rear doors.
I think this gives credence to the theory that the high windows were a mistake, not planned by Lionel. Both my stations are 121, one has had lights added.

Collector Corner / American Flyer Prewar
« on: August 09, 2020, 06:17:42 AM »
Since we have not had any AF on the site yet, other than a hang tag that I posted on another topic thread.....
Here is a look at my small but very colorful collection of American Flyer Prewar O gauge.
I especially appreciate the 5.5 and 6.5 inch lithographed 4 wheel cars.

Collector Corner / Marx Military Trains on the Lake Shore Railway
« on: July 31, 2020, 02:49:57 PM »
The Marx Military Forces have occupied the Lake Shore Railway as they pass through town to their Top Secret destination.
All civilian trains get the red light as the OD fleet takes over the right-of-ways.

Have any of the collectors of early Lionel ever seen one of these. It is a #87 Controlling Rheostat with original box for Lionel racing cars, c. 1912 to 1916.
This number is not listed in the TCA Standard of the World book, and I could not find it in any of the catalog  between 1912 and 1916.
Note on the box is a reference to another rheostat, #86, also has never been reported.

General Discussion / ODD 16 hopper
« on: July 01, 2020, 03:46:19 PM »
Do you have any history on the 10-series ballast car on the top shelf. It looks like an elongated #116. I have a "vintage reproduction" of this car in gray with yellow primer underside and (Ives number) 196 and NYCHRRR lettering in silver. It is well-made and very convincing, but I am sure it is a re-creation, by Jim Cohan or Joe Mania. It was purchased about 20 years ago in a group of legitimate 10-series cars at one of the York pre-shows. Either the maker was aware of your car, has seen another, or just made an educated guess of what Lionel could have made, and made it.
I posted a photo of this car in another category a while back.

Some Interesting Early Lionel Items
16 ballast car numbered 190, is probably a Cohen remake from long ago.
I am showing it as the design shows that he must have had knowledge of the 16 prototype that Terry showed in his post about adjusting photo sizes.

General Discussion / Sizing Photos and Adding Videos
« on: May 27, 2020, 12:03:53 PM »
I have noticed that others have had difficulty sizing photos so they will be compatible. I have found an answer.
If you use windows 10, the Microsoft store has a free program called Image Resizer for Windows 10.
It is quick and easy to use, has a sliding scale to adjust the percentage of reduction.
You will have to experiment, as sizes will vary depending on the phone or camera you used to take the original images.
Adjusting to 15 to 17% is right for my Samsung phone.
The photo uploads in a small format, but viewers can click on it to enlarge.

Another easy way to resize photos is to use the Paint feature in Windows:
Open paint
Choose file
Select resize
I used 45, that worked, you can play with the size to keep it under 180KB
Save
Done deal

Collector Corner / Lionel Manufacturing and Corporation Stamps
« on: May 27, 2020, 11:34:55 AM »
Some examples of Lionel Lines NY USA and variations of rubber ID stamps
First are the large format stamp that I have only seen on the end of Standard 114 boxcars and underside on O-gauge 601, 602 Coach / Baggage cars
I am wondering if this stamp has been seen on other cars.
