General Discussion / Re: ALL BRANDS
« on: June 30, 2021, 04:59:08 AM »
Terry hit the nail on the head. Our layouts are the world we create in our minds, (certainly better than the real world). When I find an item, such as the Bing dragon-roof station, it gives me a certain feeling, usually a good feeling, and that becomes a focal point to create the world of my layout. Certain items even inspire a video, such as this station. It went from brainstorm to production to published on youtube in less than half a day. Some videos I end up working on for a month or more.

The main objective is to have fun, keep the brain cells functioning for some of us, and create the world the way we see it or would like it to be. I also like a lot of dogs in my videos, we have 5 at home in the real world.

Loco, most of my trains are original, I don't mind a few scratches, because that is part of the train's history. I try to get the best condition that I can. I do have some restored items, but that is because originals do not exist, such as the Victory Yankee Streamliner and the red/white/blue 154 electric. I have even made some items that I think Lionel should have made, such as work cabooses for 2800 and 2600 series freights and a 2815 gray Sunoco tank car c. 1940. I will post these when I get a chance. Also some of my structures on the layout are transformer illuminated, a few have battery lights and the brown-stone buildings have LED (110v) lights attached to a sheet of plexi behind them. It gives a twinkle and also a cool blue shade of light. The battery lights are made to illuminate a bottle. They are a string of LED's with a simulated cork that has a battery and switch.

I have not posted anything lately to my layout thread, as the main changes have been just the addition of clutter in the form of more buildings, figures and vehicles, probably some different trains too.
I did recently add a small platform at a junction on my upper level to hold a new station (new to me, about 100 years old actually). It is a cute little station that I researched and found-out it was Bing HO or 00, but works for O-gauge if I raised the front edge slightly. I was attracted to it because of its distinctive roof trim that looks like dragon's tails. I featured this station in a video, see what you think. Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: aquarium gravel for coal
« on: June 29, 2021, 04:43:16 AM »
It looks good in a hopper, but is heavy, could cause operating problems. I also would not use aquarium gravel in pre or postwar loader accessories as it could clog and damage the loader. Lionel and repro simulated coal is available and usually reasonable, lightweight and made for use in loader accessories. Just my experience.

I collect what I like, and often that changes, or should I say "expands". I have some of most brands from my earliest Lionel 1906 to 1910 to some modern Lionel and of course Modern Marx, which we produced from 1992 to about 2004.
I like variety, quality and rarity, but also like items that just "work" on my layout, the Lake Shore Railway.
It may be considered clutter, but works for me when shooting close-up scenes for videos.
You can see most of my collection in the Jim's Layout category, and all over the Forum, or on my Youtube videos, here is the link

If you check our Ebay store JDPLTD, I have some 416A taller version and a pair of 416 shorter type for restoration, that are for sale.

With that number it would be modern Lionel, probably between 1980 and 2000

Collector Corner / Re: Odd Prewar Car Lighting Set

I have never seen these lights in their original package, have only seen them in cars, Illini and Columbia. I still have to find them in a catalog (mid 1920's) but am assuming that AF sold them separate, because more cars show up without the lights than with them. Not a big production item, because I believe the litho Illini and Columbia cars are the only cars that they are designed to fit.

A nice set could go $400 to $500, I have seen them go even higher, because so hard to find with decent paint.

Here is the exact light fixture, in one of my Illini cars. These were sold as accessory lights by AF for unlighted early cars, early to mid 1920's. The wires string between the cars and attach to a power terminal on a 3020 Boxcab loco.

Here is the fixture in a late 1930's 3211 AF caboose. Not the same, but similar to lighting sets for early Illini / Columbia cars. I think AF sold these light sets as accessories for the early unlighted cars. My Illini set is too early, does not have factory lighting or the accessory lights, like in your Lionel 428 series cars.

I can't see the last photo, out of focus, but the other photos show fixtures that look like American Flyer such as would be in early Illini or Columbia cars, made mid 1920's.

The Jr Hiawatha sets are hard to find nice. I will probably go for a high price.

Agreed, the resizing process and time that it takes has limited the pictures that I post. I have too much lawn to mow this time of the year!

Steps are good for your health. Get a Garman or other fitness monitor.
I have 2 control locations to help with this, but I also have a Garman.
