2660 crane
« on: May 08, 2021, 08:23:18 PM »
Can't seem to find any info , regarding the 2660 crane having latch couplers. All the ones I see for sale have the box couplers. I know they will connect up. My train is for display only, so I would like to match the couplers. Loco

The 2660 crane only came with box couplers. The box coupler will connect perfectly with a latch coupler. There are different versions, but they all look basically the same.

If you are repainting, you could buy any 2660/2560 crane, repaint it, and then drill out a hole on the center of the frame from any 650 series car with latch couplers and make yourself one. You need the 650 frame for theodd shaped latch coupler hole and the bar that holds the coupler up. A 654 tank car for a frame might set you back $5.

Right, the 660/2660 crane only came with box couplers. There is an uncataloged 660 version, I believe it only came in a set, about 1941. I will post some pictures.
Terry is right, latch couplers will mate with box couplers on most cars. The only issue may be the coupler height.

I have posted some pix of the 660 crane and uncataloged 1684 set it came with c. 1941. The crane has manual/low-hood couplers, trucks attached with hollow eyelets. Note that 2660 has been factory painted over, so no number shows. I have had this set, 1684, 1689T, 1677, 1677, 660 (or maybe 1660), 1682 since purchased at a Chicago area meet in the 1980's. Also, since the 2660 door has been opened (we watch too much Perry Mason), I am showing pictures of a 2660 crane made during WWII by Madison Hardware. The crane is normal late production, except it is mounted to a 1600 series frame, which Madison apparently had a large stock of.

That is a cool crane Jim. Probably the most special of the cranes or maybe it's a Madison wartime peice? You constantly bring out the good stuff. Thanks.

I had a 2660X which came in uncataloged sets with latch couplers, but is the same as a regular RS crane but no pins on the couplers and springs on the coupler hoods.

I had a 2660X box a few years ago, got it empty and wondered what was different about the crane that came in it. Now I know, thanks.
