Here's something I saw on eBay earlier:

Hmm. One of you postwar collectors should buy it so you can tell use what it is.

Gray not brown.  One is missing so just more of a curiosity; you may wait a lifetime for another single gray bumper to show up.

The N0 50 is a later model with horn to the side, so should have blue bumpers. Gray only came on earliest center-horn models. The gray bumper is either swapped from an earlier car, also could be faded to gray. Either way shows the sad state of "quality" that is on ebay.

Hi
I just signed up and noticed the post on the 2 7/8 gons.
I sold the dummy in 1972. Did not know where it went, the floor was replaced by me and Jimmy Cohen gave me the parts to put the truck together.

Welcome aboard Marty.

What is the deal with this auction:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/LIONEL-42-STANDARD-GAUGE-LOCO-NOT-RUNNING-SOME-MINOR-PARTS-MISSING-VG/324191207339

A beat up 42 for $725?

Here's a likely steal. Full nickel 213 stock car at $76. ending Friday afternoon. That should be worth hundreds more.

Not quite sure what to make of this. There are 3 610's and this 612 all blue & silver from this seller. Never known to have come in this color combo on these cars. What do you think?

The Blue and Alum 610/612 cars are uncataloged from about 1935. Very hard to find in nice shape, but not so hard that those beat up cars are worth buying.

They only made them in blue for a short while and then went to red and alum. which is quite common.

Here's an article I wrote on the cars back when I started this site:

Thanks for the info. Things get a little murky when I step out past 1926.

The beat-up 42 was sold by Tony Hay for $725. Close inspection of number shows it could be original gold rubber stamping on light gray. That could explain the price.

A black double motor 42 just sold for $787. Maybe they are becoming more popular?

Here's something for you IVES collectors:

I don't collect IVES, but think those are better cars?

Except for the cheap AF litho hopper, the 2 Ives T-truck cars are worth pursuing, however when I last checked, the price is getting up there.

Lionel 701 electric

This beat up loco just sold for $357. Is it the motor with the L rivets driving the price?

I would guess so. I saw that and wondered what else it could be. No pedestal headlight, no bell, missing a handrail. I've discussed this with Bill Blystone and we believe that  early period Lionel O gauge is like the last frontier. Postwar and classic period prewar are plentiful. Collectors are looking for something and have discovered our corner of the world. The trains Bill and I collect have been overlooked for so long that when something comes up, like this 701, it draws a lot of interest.

I think you are right about the last fronteer.

The other half is the money.  I sold a tonka Firetruck worth about $200  for $1300 on eBay a few years ago. The buyer called me when he got it to thank me. He said his neighbor had that truck when he was a kid, and he'd just done a forced distribution from his IRA, and decided to buy the truck.
