This is the 3rd time this month this same auction has been listed. I've not seen a reserve on the first two listings but plenty of bids. Is the seller refusing to sell or is there a problem with the high bidder? I see the high bidder on both appears to be the same person with only 1 feedback but?

He has to be playing games.

I saw that closed once before at $271, so 315 for the pile delivered if you wanted to repaint is not a bad deal.  The buyer would pay quick because he'd be afraid the seller would cancel the deal.

Just a quick guesstimate, but if I took those trains to a show in LA, I'd come away with 400 easy.

I bet the bidder you see is the seller's shill bidding account.

I looked at his listings and he is weird. LAZY is a good word. His other listings are similar. Just whatever he got from one person in a large lot.

Here's an idea. . .  Maybe it's his pride and joy and he's just listing it so we'll be jealous?

Maybe his wife said, "Get that out of here." So he's listing it on eBay to appease her.

Here's an interesting cut from a Jobbers catalog that's up on eBay. It shows a Lionel Outfit 291. Outfit 291 was offered in 1926 only which consisted of  252 loco, 800 boxcar, 803 hopper , 804 tank car, and an 801 caboose. The cut shows a 153 loco, 800, 804, and 801 (which is Outfit 91 from 1925) but the description says it contains a reversible loco with 4 freight cars. So just another example a wrong cut with the right description. There's also a 294 Outfit shown with an Outfit 94 cut.

Lionel Stockwatch Cattle shocker

Rare 1947 Original Postwar Lionel 1214 Stock-Watch DC Fence Controller, VG]https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-1947-Original-Postwar-Lionel-1214-Stock-Watch-DC-Fence-Controller-VG/373124678506]Rare 1947 Original Postwar Lionel 1214 Stock-Watch DC Fence Controller, VG

I saw this last week and thought it would be fun to have. I bet internally it's like a 171 Inverter, but runs on a DC battery. My snipe program just sent me a note saying it had passed my 200 bid. I'm not willing to pay more than that to see how it works and show it off. Maybe one of you want it?

Pea Green 156X on eBay
« Reply #19 on: July 31, 2020, 06:56:17 PM »
Here's something you don't see often. Pea Green 156X with matching passenger cars. I won't be bidding on this, so you can grab it.

Wow! this must be a paint sample, hand-painted by JLC himself. If you buy that, I have some flying pigs for sale.
Some kid must have tired of the dark green color and decided to liven it up.

There was a guy here in AZ who had a white 253 and a red 154. Both obviously over-painted by children.  He swore they were rare. The lettering was bleeding through on the 154, and but he said it was worn off. And who was I to argue with him. He had grandchildren older than me.

He was a character. He livened up the train meets.

Lionel brass 7 loco from Kughn collection
« Reply #22 on: August 01, 2020, 07:03:44 PM »
Most 7 locos I see are like this. Polished and the red repainted. Also, I think that's got a repro front truck.

Disgusting. You might as well buy a repro, or just plate a 6.

A 10-unit Marx combo train with transformer for under $4.50. WOW.
Seems cheap, but the bread-winner was probably only bringing home a few dollars a day in 1937.
Sears catalog art department did great work making the Marx Train look almost as desirable as the Lionel set....which was almost $10.

I went to one of those inflation calculators and $4.50 in 1936 translates to $83.46 in 2020. Still much more for your money then than now.

That's because back then the kids were smarter and didn't chew on the trains so they could use cheaper lead paint. When I harvested some skin off my brother with Vise-Grips, my parents never thought tp blame the pliers.

Actually, 83 dollars is more than a nice New Bright train set will set you back. You can get a nice new bright set for under 40.

I'd rather have the Marx train.

Stout Auctions has some neat stuff listed in the Friday auction. Here's a link:

https://connect.invaluable.com/stout/auction-catalog/August-Friday-Pre-and-Postwar-Toy-Trains_SHW8L1332X/SHW8L1332X?keywords=prewar

A couple of the  listings have odd descriptions . . . "The engine is either really nice C7+ or an older repaint. Overall the set looks nicer than the grade represents."

Here's a neat set with odd condition statement.

https://connect.invaluable.com/stout/auction-lot/ives-prewar-wide-gauge-boxed-set-with-3237-loco-w_32D4915A9E

I have the olive 601/602 passenger cars, and Mike posted pictures of an 801 with the wrong number recently. The trains are neat, but having to qualify them as "might be repainted" lowers the WOW factor.

Terry, which is the 801 with the wrong number? And what are the  might be repainted?
